Hi, I'm Chris Musgrave, and I'm a BZ addict…
This statement sums up my life pretty well.. I'm a twenty one year-old college
student currently attending the University of Florida. Before I arrived at UF in
August of 1997, I was still using an old 486 33mhz IBM-compatible, and multiplayer
computer games were just a distant rumor.
Upon arrival at UF, not only did I get to play with a brand new P2, but I got
introduced to this wonderful thing called a LAN. I was in heaven. I went out and
bought all kinds of games. I played and I played and I played…and my grades
suffered as a result.
After two semesters of this, I decided to can the games and get back to my
studies. For the most part, I've stuck to this decree. For the most part. You see,
I had this game called Battlezone. It played great over the LAN, but it wouldn't
work over UF's proxy server, so I couldn't play over the internet. Pretty soon,
nobody at UF wanted to play BZ anymore, and I almost sold my copy to someone
else. But, for some reason, I couldn't cast this game aside.
With the release of the 1.31 patch, Battlezone began to function on the proxy
server, and though none of my friends could be convinced to return to BZ, I soon
discovered the remarkable community that had built up around this remarkable
game. I started playing in earnest, and to this day, Battlezone is one of the few
games I'll spend time on.
When a bunch of my BZ buddies decided to start playing Tribes, I set BZ aside
in favor of this new game. Having played Unreal, Quake2, and Jedi Knight, Tribes
was a wonderful surprise, easily surpassing all three of these games (though I'm
still waiting for another game that has hand-to-hand combat like Jedi Knight….J ).
I've had a great time so far in Tribes, and I can't wait for BZ2!
Oh yeah, a little bit about me. Well, I played cello for 7 years before I decided
that I really didn't want to spend $1,000 on a cello (I had been using a school
instrument). I love animals, and I actually thought about majoring in veterinary
medicine for a while. Unfortunately, allergies got in the way of that. Of course,
I'm allergic to fur, so I went out a got an iguana. Its kind of like a 6 foot, scaly
dog that doesn't bark. These animals make great pets, if cared for properly.
I also like to write. I've started God knows how many books and short stories
over the course of the past 6 years. I'm also a perfectionist, which means I
haven't finished one of them. However, a buddy of mine and I are seriously
batting around ideas for a possible computer game that we hope to eventually
collaborate on. I know almost nothing about computer code (yet), but I can
write one heck of a story…
So what did this animal-loving, literary-loving, math-hating student decided to
do with his life? Would you believe aerospace engineering? Call me crazy, but as
much as I hate math, I love machines more. I love spaceflight even more. My room
is littered with half-finished spacecraft designs of all kinds, from simple LEO rockets
to nuclear powered interplanetary transports. So college has been an interesting
experience so far, trying at certain times and rewarding at others.
And my gaming quirks? I've got a sub-woofer hooked up to my computer the just
about brings the walls down during a game. Annoys the neighbors, but they have
no business being asleep at 3 am, right? I also play Quake2, Battlezone, and Tribes
with a 10 year-old joystick. My friends have been after me to buy a sidewinder, but
they'll have to pry this Flightstick from my cold, dead hands first…
